STAG

Spectrum Text Adventure Generator

STAG → YOUR STORY → .TAP → ZX SPECTRUM

MAKE A ZX SPECTRUM GAME.
NO BASIC. NO ENGINE. JUST CREATE. JUST PLAY.

A visual editor for creating real 48K and 128K text adventures.

Make your own ZX Spectrum game. No programming. A real TAP file.

STAG is a Windows tool that turns your ideas into playable text and illustrated adventures for the ZX Spectrum.

Design rooms, objects, characters, enemies, maps, combat and conversations. Import your own artwork. Write your story.

Then:

Generate the .TAP. Load it into an emulator. Play.

No unfinished project.

No CODE required.

Your adventure ends as a tape the Spectrum can actually run.

What can you do with STAG?

  • Create without programming. STAG handles the code generation for you.
  • ZX Spectrum 48K — FREE and complete. Up to 20 rooms, zone graphics, menu, intro, death screen and enemies.
  • ZX Spectrum 128K — REGISTERED. Up to 40 rooms, more illustrations, AY music and adventures split across two 48K tapes.
  • Visual N/E/S/W map. Build your maze by hand or generate one automatically.
  • No impossible paths. Map validation helps prevent softlocks and inaccessible areas.
  • Real adventure mechanics. Items, chests, keys, equipment, doors, conversations, USE, EXAMINE, READ and objectives.
  • Optional dice-based combat. Use d20/d6 mechanics for a classic RPG feel.
  • Skill checks. Make character stats determine whether the player can overcome an obstacle.
  • Continue codes. Recover your room, inventory and progress after death.
  • Two-tape adventures. Continue your story using a code between games.
  • Your own artwork. Convert PNG images into Spectrum-style graphics for scenes, enemies, title screens and intros.
  • ZX Spectrum palette and font. Give your adventure an authentic retro identity.
  • 8 interface languages. Translate your own game using XML files.
  • Templates and examples. Cyberpunk, fantasy, minimal...

FROM YOUR ART TO THE SPECTRUM

Got an illustration?

PNG → STAG → Spectrum.

Prepare your scenes, enemies, title screens or introductions and let STAG convert them into Spectrum-compatible graphics.

You don't need to draw inside the editor.

Your art. Your story. Your game.

YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW CODE

STAG generates the game for you.

You need:

  • Windows / Linux
  • STAG
  • Boriel ZX Basic to generate the TAP
  • A ZX Spectrum emulator to play

STAG is portable: Unzip it. Run it. Start creating.

WHAT WILL YOU CREATE?

A text adventure.

An RPG.

A maze.

A science-fiction story.

A cyberpunk adventure.

A fantasy quest.

A 20-room nightmare.

Or something that doesn't exist yet.

STAG provides the tools.

The adventure is yours.

MAKE IT. GENERATE IT. LOAD IT.

STAG — Spectrum Text Adventures Generator

Your story. Your map. Your game. Your TAP.

48K doesn't lock you out.

128K gives you room to grow.

STAG only asks for attribution to STAG, its author and Boriel BASIC.
